Creating a legacy for Wealden

Wealden District Council
Up to £71,000, plus £5,000 S.151 Officer supplement and £3,564 car allowance

Wealden is a great place to live and work. From the stunning Birling Gap coastline amid the Seven Sisters in the south to the Ashdown Forest, with its six thousand acres of enchanted woodland and heathland in the north, Wealden has an impressive 300 square miles of countryside, with two thirds classed as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We’re incredibly proud to look after our environment whilst also focusing on providing excellent services to our five market towns.

Over the last 10 years, Wealden has truly transformed the way it operates and provides services to residents. We have ambitious plans for 2020 and beyond, including an exciting town centre regeneration project, a new and developing commercial strategy, delivery of phase two of our digitalisation project and our housing building programme, to name but a few. As we enter a new decade, we will continue to build on this success and now require an exceptional leader to help further our ambitions.

As Head of Financial Services (S.151), you will act as gatekeeper for all of the Council’s financial matters and develop frameworks to ensure cohesion between finances, accounting systems and their reviews. A strong leader of people, you will build core internal relationships with colleagues and with your expert teams – including the newly positioned Revenues & Benefits service – whilst also influencing externally with our audit partners and other key stakeholders. As we look to take bolder steps forward with our investment decisions, you will also advise and support the direction of travel for the Council’s strategic commercial endeavours.

A qualified accountant with prior experience of holding S.151 Officer responsibilities, you will have a proactive, positive and flexible approach to new challenges. Working closely with our Chief Executive, senior officers and elected Members, you will bring strategic-level thinking and a wealth of experience in leading strong financial management in a Local Government context.

Based in the town of Hailsham, you’ll benefit from a wealth of amenities nearby whilst being surrounded by rural character. Brighton and Eastbourne are also within easy reach. Join us in this pivotal role and make a positive impact to continue to improve the lives of our residents.
